thinking of trying therapy?

I think that everyone should have access to therapy, but I know the reality is that public health services in many countries have long waiting lists, and the private sector is often prohibitively expensive.

Finding the right therapist can be another barrier. You must work with someone that you feel comfortable with. After all, it should be a relationship based on trust and mutual respect.

So how do you find the right therapist for you?

A recommendation is best

If you know someone who has had therapy, you could ask them about their experience. If it was helpful, contact the recommended therapist and have a no-obligation chat. Most therapists will offer this as it is an excellent way of finding out if they can help you and that you are both the right ‘fit’ for each other.

Therapists are always happy to refer you to someone they trust if you need specialist help, or treatment for eating disorders, for example.

Directories can be confusing

When you consult Therapy Directories, you will find that most therapists describe themselves similarly. There will be a headshot so you can see if you like their look. In their introduction, they will often mention the type of therapy they offer or their ‘approach’.

Why have an ‘approach’?

When therapists train, they learn from different schools of therapy and often settle on the one approach they feel is right for them. However, there are so many schools of thought, most of them unknown to people seeking therapy, and this makes it difficult for people to choose.

It’s not about them. It’s about you!

You are an individual and deserve to be treated like one. Finding the therapeutic approach that suits you and the way you are in the world should not involve having to gen up on what the different approaches mean.

Our approach in Quest Cognitive Hypnotherapy is to take the proven tools and techniques from a variety of therapy types and tailor them to suit the personality of our client. We also use hypnotherapy as a tool to help you access your unconscious mind and to help make the changes you are seeking ‘stick’.
